William Nicholson (1872-1949) began his career in collaboration with brother-in-law James Pryde. Under the name of the Beggarstaff brothers, they created influential poster designs. He went on to gain fame for his woodcuts, including his popular portrait of Queen Victoria. The Almanac of Sports was accompanied by the verses of Rudyard Kipling. Nicholson's graphic style has an elegant economy of line, describing his subjects in bold blacks with muted colour. These prints are redolent of the fin de siecle, hinting at both Japanese influence and the emergence of Art Nouveau.
