The portrait of Lord Nelson (1758-1805) is after the oil by Edward Orme is surmounted by an image of the orobouros - the snake swallowing its tail - a symbol of eternity. This was most likely produced to coincide with the aftermath of news of Nelson's death at Trafalgar in October 1805.
