This heroic depiction of Lord Nelson is based on the portrait by John Hoppner painted in 1801, following the Battle of Copenhagen. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1802 and purchased for the Royal Collection, although it was not delivered to St James's Palace until 1810, after Hoppner's death. Hoppner painted a further eleven versions, one of which is in the National Maritime Museum. This portrait was used as the pose for the waxwork of Nelson by Catherine Andras in Westminster Abbey.
