Napoleon I
Steel engraving by D. J. Pound. Published by The London Printing and Publishing Company, circa 1860.
Image size: 6” x 4 1/2”, plus title and margins
Very good condition throughout, some very light foxing.
This striking portrait of the Emperor of France, appearing every inch the epitome of villainy, has flattered his physiognomy by corseting his corpulent frame into a semblance of svelteness. The harshness of the steel engraving has etched a decided look of malevolence upon his visage. The finely engraved borders show battle flags, crests and banners celebrating his achievements as a brilliant soldier, tactician and administrator. Waterloo is, of course, conspicuous by its absence.
