Count de Las Cases
Black and white steel engraving by Robert Cooper. Published by Henry Colburn, London, 20 March 1824.

After serving Napoleon as a chamberlain and count of the empire, Las Cases followed the former emperor into exile on Saint Helena in 1815. Here he acted unofficially as secretary to his patron, recording passages of Napoleon's discourse. Suspected by the British authorities of attempting to have documents smuggled from Saint Helena, Las Cases was expelled from the island in 1816.
