Saluting The Admiral
Chromolithograph after the painting by Albert W. Holden, one of three plates presented with Pears Magazine, 1905.
Image size: 28 1/4" x 19", plus margins.
Excellent condition throughout.
This chromolithograph is a great technical achievement, being colour printed in thirteen colours. The image depicts a Greenwich Pensioner in the Painted Hall of Greenwich Hospital saluting a bust of Nelson, positioned on a column decorated with a laurel wreath and a Union Jack for Trafalgar Day. Albert Holden (1848-1932) was a painter of genre scenes, and this example of his work is essentially a nostaligic evocation as the Pensioners departed Greenwich Hospital forty years previously, in 1865. The painting was commissioned by Messrs Pears and the original oil on canvas, sold at auction in July 2013 for £2,500.
