'The original portrait of Lord Nelson was painted for him by Leonardo Guzzardi, of Palermo, in 1799. Nelson is shown wearing the aigrette, [the chelengk] consisting of an artificial plume covered with pearls, which was given to him by the Grand Seignior Selim III, after the Battle of the Nile, and the portrait was presented by Lord Nelson to the Sultan in return for the latter's gift. It is a copy of this picture which the Sultan has just presented to the National Portrait Gallery.'
