The scarce image depicts HMS Victory at anchor in Portsmouth Harbour, with the troopship HMS Serapis moored alongside and the Semaphore Tower beyond. An especially atttractive chromolithograph benefitting from a subtle palate of colours with a particularly successful treatment of the sky.
William Edward Atkins (1842-1910) was born in Portsmouth, where his artist father George Atkins was organist at St Ann's Chapel at Portsmouth Naval Base. W.E. Atkins was naval correspondent and marine artist to The Graphic. His watercolours are found in the collections of the National Maritime Museum, Royal Naval Museum and Portsmouth City Museum and Art Gallery.
