One from a series of twelve discs originally contained within a circular bronzed box of medal form decorated with a portrait of Nelson on the obverse and Britannia on the reverse.
Algiers was the headquarters of of the Barbary pirates who for centuries had preyed upon European Christians and taken them into slavery. This led, in 1817, to the bombardment of the city and the rease of many such victims.
