Ld. Howe's Victory
Aquatint and line etching, with later hand colour, from the series Record of British Naval Valour published by Edward Orme, 1817.
Dimensions: 2 5/8" diameter approx
One from a series of twelve discs originally contained within a circular bronzed box of medal form decorated with a portrait of Nelson on the obverse and Britannia on the reverse.
On 4 June 1794 off Ushant, the English fleet under the command of Admiral Howe encountered a French convoy of ships carrying grain from America, commanded by Admiral Villaret de Joyeuse. Battle was joined. It led to an overwhelming victory for Howe - and a much needed one for his country at that moment.
