Clare Leighton (1898-1989) ranks among the pre-eminent wood engravers of the twentieth century, and this powerful series of prints demonstrate her illustrative skills at their height. Leighton depicted a rural way of life that she recognised was disappearing and would soon vanish forever. These images reflect the enjoyment she found in the garden throughout the year. Full of movement and contrast, these decades-old images still appear strikingly modern, no doubt because of the abstract qualities of the design that were her trademark.
