Clare Leighton (1898-1989) ranks among the pre-eminent wood engravers of the twentieth century, and this powerful series of prints demonstrate her illustrative skills at their height. Leighton depicted a rural way of life that she recognised was disappearing and would soon vanish forever. Each image evokes an aspect of agricultural life in its season: generally laborious work in a landscape of open skies and rolling hills. Full of movement and contrast, these eighty-year-old images still appear strikingly modern, no doubt because of the abstract qualities of the design that were her trademark.
