HMS Prince, First-Rate, 110 Guns
Black and white etching, dated 1828, drawn and etched by E.W. Cooke (1811-1877). Published as part of Shipping and Craft, 1829.
Image size: 9" x 7"
Very good condition throughout.
In stark contrast to other of his etchings in 'Shipping and Craft' - the Convict Ship, for example - Cooke he shows off the majestic lines of HMS Prince as she lies, jury-rigged, in Portsmouth Harbour. She is shown, as the text describes, with 'the Stern Balconies, as built before the close sterns were introduced'.
HMS Prince was a 98-gun (nominally 110) second rate - again, not as Cooke entitles her - launched in 1788 and rebuilt in 1796. She fought at Trafalgar and proved especially valuable during the strorms that followed, saving many lives. After the war ended in 1815 she remained in Portsmouth until withdrawn from service and broken up in 1837.
