GREENWICH PALACE, 1558
Collotype, undated, but estimated circa 1880 - possibly published by the London Topographical Society, after Anthonis van den Wyngaerte, 1558.
Image size: 5 1/4" x 23 5/8" approx., plus borders.
Generally very good condition throughout. Mounted in acid-free board and framed.
This is one of two views of the Palace at Greenwich made Anthonis van den Wyngaerte in 1558. (The original drawings are held in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford). This one looks north over the Tudor palace. In the centre is the gatehouse which stood in the approximate position of the Queen's House nowadays. To the right the tilt yard can be seen; to the left, in the far distance, St Paul's Cathedral - still with its spire, destroyed by fire in 1561.
