This view of Greenwich - and the Royal Hospital in particular - is taken from the west. At the time the Royal Dock still operated at Deptford, whilst the complex of buildings at Greenwich served both as an administrative centre for the Navy and as a refuge for naval veterans the so-called Greenwich Pensioners.
