The North West Prospect of Deptford in the County of Kent
Copper engraving by Samuel and Nathaniel Buck, published 1739.
Image size: 12 3/4" x 32 1/2" approx, including title and margins.
Generally very good condition throughout.
Between 1728 & 1753 the brothers Samuel and Nathaniel Buck travelled England and Wales to produce a series of eighty-three detailed panoramas of the 'cities, seaports and capital towns'. It is believed that they commissioned the maritime artist Peter Monamy (1681-1749) to supply the depiction of shipping in the Thames. This Prospect of Deptford published on 26 March 1739, was designed to join together, if desired, with Greenwich to form one continuous view. It shows both the old parish church of St Nicholas and the recently completed St Paul’s, consecrated in 1730. Also visible is the Master Shipwright’s House (denoted as No 6), which still stands today: a remarkable survival in twenty-first century Deptford.
