The Watering Places of Kent

Lithograph with original hand outline colour, from the Weekly Dispatch Atlas, published by Edward Weller, circa 1860.

Image size: 16 3/4" x 12" plus margins.

Very good condition throughout. Slight age discolouration to edge of paper.

A delightful map which extends from Whitstable in the north, to Dymchurch in the south. The pink coastline suggesting seaside rock and the pale blue wash of the sea lends the map a healthy airiness, emphasising the Victorian belief in the benefical effects of the ozone.

The railways have begun to wind their iron way towards the coast, resulting in the seaside resorts of Folkestone, Dover, Deal, Ramsgate, Margate and Whitstable. Still under construction is the London Chatham and Dover Railway linking Dover and Canterbury, and the branch line between Whistable and Margate.

£85.00 unmounted, unframed.
