Crows Nest, Splash Point, Paradise Plantation, Wish Tower, Gore Chalk Pit and Great Redoubt: each a poetic evocation of an Edwardian seaside resort. The obvious pleasures of the Pier, Bandstand, American Bowling Saloon and Miniature Rifle Saloon contrast with the restorative qualities of the Hydropathic Establishment and All Saints Convalescent Hospital, which conjure up images of serried ranks of bath chairs. Most revealing of all are the segregated bathing places with strict demarkation between the sexes and strata of seaside society: ladies, gents, mixed and men.
