Cornwall
Wood engraving by J[oshua] Archer (c1792-1863) from the Guide To Knowledge, published by William Pinnock, c1832-1836.
Image size: 6 1/2 x 9", plus margins.
Generally very good condition throughout. Some minor age spotting to edges of paper.
A spirited map of Cornwall, indicating the 'Copper Mines', 'Tin Mines' and 'Copper and Tin Mines'. The Scilly Isles appear framed in isolation and shifted northwards into the Bristol Channel and the Eddystone Light is charmingly depicted in the south east corner.
This ingenious series of maps is among the most striking of the early nineteenth century. Aimed at a popular audience, their 'negative' appearance, predating the invention of photogrpahy by a decade, is highly unusual. Increasingly scarce.
