Cantium quod nunc Kent

Copper engraving with old hand colour, engraved by William Kip, published by Norden circa 1610.

Image size: 11" x 15"

Generally good condition given the age of this piece, left and margins trimmed close. The map has benefitted from sympathetic restoration which has strengthened the fragile paper in places and added replacement margins to sides. Chips to upper and lower margins, not affecting image.

The title is framed by a strapwork border with a pair of perching parrots, and a table lists 'The names of all the hundredes of this mappe.'

The map also extends into 'Parte of Sussex' and shows Rye on the coast before its harbour was silted up, and also indicates 'Olde Winchelsea whose Ruyns lurk unseen under the sea waves.'

£325.00 unmounted, unframed.
