Johnson's Australia

Lithograph with original stencilled hand colour. Published by Johnson and Ward in Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, circa 1866.

Image size: 13" x 15 1/4" plus margins.

Generally very good condition throughout. Minor age staining to edges of paper, as expected.

An attractive American map of Australia published in New York. The bold blocks of stencil colouring - in a delicious ice cream palette of vanilla, raspberry and pistachio -  are in startling contrast to the ornamented strapwork border, through which Van Diemen's Land breaks free. The table at the bottom of the map lists the chronology of the discovery of the continent, from Pera and Arnhem in 1623 to Flinders' discovery of Eyre Land in 1802.
