Smith's Saponaceous Rose Tooth Cream. Manufactured only by Wright and Holdsworth, Successors to Joseph Smith, London. Price 1/s & 2/6 Per Pot.

Glazed pottery potlid with base. The difference in colour between the lid and base suggests a later marriage of the two.

Generally good condition throughout. Minor chips, crazing and firing imperfections under the glaze, as is to be expected from what is essentially a piece of Victorian packaging.

Overall dimensions: 1 5/8" x 2 5/8 x 1"

This lid is an understated masterpiece of the lettering engraver's art as each of the eight lines displays a different letterform, the whole effortlessly uniting to form a harmonious and eye-catching design.

As saponaceous means having the qualities of soap, this potlid offers a new insight on the old phrase "Wash your mouth out!"
