Tann's Reliance Safe Plate

Cast iron safe plate for John Tann's Reliance Safe, 117 Newgate St, London.

Early twentieth century.

Dimensions: 9 1/4" x 7 1/8"

Good condition throughout. Old turquoise paint; various chips reveal hints of an earlier coat of cream paint and the cast iron surface beneath, which adds to, rather than detracts from, the overall effect.

The use of the emblem of an anchor as a trademark continues a long tradition in English iconography of using nautical imagery to denote steadfastness and reliability.
