Soldier's Sweetheart Pincushion

A soldier's sweetheart pincushion: cloth stuffed with sawdust, silk badges, tinsel, sequins and beads; an embroidered and appliqued heart, emblazoned with the badge of the [East] Suffolk Regiment including the motto: 'Montis Insignia Calpe' (meaning 'Badge of Mount Calpe' - the motto of Gibraltar, recognising the regiment’s service in the Great Siege 1779-93), the Allies' flags.  The regiment arrived in France in January 1915. It was then redirected to Salonika in November the same year, remaining there for the rest of the conflict. There is also the sentimental verse, 'THINK OF ME' - "When the golden sun is sinking and your mind from care set free, when of others you are thinking, will you sometimes think of me". Not dated, but presumed to be 1914-18 vintage. In contemporary glazed wooden box.

Size: 9" x 9" x 3" approx. overall.

Generally intact and in good condition for its age. The box originally showed signs of worm in the past ; this has been thoroughly treated and, after minor conservation, entirely refitted.

Pincushions similar to this are likely to have been the work of convalescent soldiers. This one is a particularly nice example, displayed as it is in its wooden box. It has a charm and quality that still give off the sentiment of the suffering and sacrifice of its maker.
