The Irish Packet Entering The Mersey, 1831

Oil on board by Edward Carlill, presented floating in an unglazed box frame. Undated, though presumed to be of mid-twentieth century vintage.

Size of painting: 7" x 9 3/8"

External dimensions of frame: 8 1/2" x 10 7/8"

Condition: The painting has suffered some form of heat damage, resulting in a curious damage to the surface of the paint. This is not unpleasant and, indeed adds to the effect by giving  the painting a surrealistic air of mystery, as if the ship is sailing through some strange maritime meterological phenomenon.

An intriguing piece, following in the wake of nineteenth century naive marine painters and Alfred Wallis of St. Ives, who was the most notable exponent of continuing the tradition into the twentieth century.
