Duke of Wellington Snuffbox

Snuffbox of ebonized wood, the lid made of a profile portrait (by Allen and Moore, Birmingham) of Arthur Duke of Wellington, circa 1852. The base bears the inscription 'INTREPID CHAMPION OF FREEDOM ENLIGHTENED ADVOCATE OF PEACE NOT BORN FOR HIMSELF BUT FOR THE UNIVERSE'. It is probable that despite the neat fit of the box and its lid, the two medallions probably do not belong together - the base more likely belonging to the reverse of a portrait of Charles James Fox.

Size: 1.1/4" high - 2" diameter

Generally good condition - a small loss to the rim of the portrait, just by the 'WEL-' of 'WELLINGTON' - not detracting from the whole.
