Brunette Plaster Profile

Painted plaster, with wire ring for wall hanging embedded in the reverse.

Registration number RD 839926 impressed in the plaster.

Dating from the 1940s.

Height 12", width 7 1/4".

Generally very good condition throughout.

Modelled with a curvaceous flourish, mass produced and originally sold at Woolworth's for a few shillings, these inexpensive plaster wall ornaments, along with alsatians rampant guarding the radiogram, were the popular art of their day and are the twentieth century successors to Staffordshire figures. Seventy years on, they are now regarded as important period pieces, preserving in plaster the elaborate coiffures of the forties and casting a glance of proud glamour in the face of austerity.

Nowadays increasingly scarce.
