Clare Leighton

Just added to these pages, a few examples of the black and white lithographs of the original wood-engraving by Clare Leighton that were published as illustrations to her Four Hedges, A Gardener's Chronicle of 1935.

Clare Leighton (1898-1989) ranks among the pre-eminent wood engravers of the twentieth century, and this powerful series of prints demonstrate her illustrative skills at their height. Leighton depicted a rural way of life that she recognised was disappearing and would soon vanish forever. These images reflect the passionate enjoyment she found in the garden throughout the year. Full of movement and contrast, these decades-old images still appear strikingly modern, no doubt because of the abstract qualities of the design that were her trademark.
